The Saturday Morning Crew: Finding Community Through Cycling

The Saturday Morning Crew: Finding Community Through Cycling

October 22, 2026

It started with a post in a neighborhood Facebook group.

"Casual Saturday ride. All experience levels welcome. Coffee afterward."

I'd lived in the area for almost two years and still didn't know many people outside of work. Joining a group of strangers at eight in the morning wasn't exactly my idea of a relaxing weekend.

But I decided to give it a shot.

The First Ride

There were six of us that morning.

We met outside a small coffee shop, introduced ourselves, and set off along the river trail.

Nobody was particularly concerned about speed. We chatted, stopped for photos, and waited whenever someone needed a break.

By the time we returned, we'd ridden twelve miles.

And somehow, I felt like I'd known these people for years.

A Growing Tradition

The following Saturday, eight riders showed up.

Then twelve.

Soon, our little weekend group included teachers, engineers, retirees, parents, and people who simply wanted an excuse to get outside.

We started organizing themed rides: sunrise routes, neighborhood food stops, and longer adventures outside the city.

Someone even made matching shirts.

More Than a Group Ride

Over time, the friendships extended beyond cycling.

We celebrated birthdays, helped each other move, and checked in when someone hadn't shown up for a few weeks.

The bikes brought us together, but the community kept us coming back.

And the best part? New riders still show up almost every weekend.

Whenever someone looks nervous at their first group ride, I remember exactly how I felt that first Saturday.

I make sure to introduce myself.

Because sometimes, a simple invitation to ride can lead to something much bigger.
