The First 100 Miles: A Beginner's Journey to Confidence
October 22, 2026
There was a time when my commute was the worst part of my day. Forty-five minutes of traffic, endless red lights, and the same frustrating routine every morning. By the time I arrived at work, I already felt exhausted.
Then I decided to try something different.
My first ride to the office wasn't particularly graceful. I took a wrong turn, underestimated a hill, and arrived with a backpack full of things I probably didn't need. But something unexpected happened along the way.
I actually enjoyed getting to work.
Finding a Different Rhythm
Within a few weeks, my daily commute became something I looked forward to. Instead of sitting behind a steering wheel, I was moving through neighborhoods I'd never noticed before.
There was a little coffee shop tucked between two apartment buildings. A park with a winding trail along the river. A quiet residential street where the trees formed a canopy overhead.
Places I'd driven past hundreds of times suddenly felt new.
More Than Transportation
The biggest surprise wasn't how much time I saved or how much less I spent on gas. It was how riding changed my relationship with the city.
I started taking longer routes home just because I could. Some evenings, I'd ride along the waterfront and watch the sun disappear behind the skyline.
Those extra miles became my favorite part of the day.
I still drive when I need to. But whenever the weather cooperates, you'll find me on two wheels.
And sometimes, the long way home is exactly where I want to be.
